Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all. If you're traveling this season be safe on the roads.

Here is an early Christmas gift: A link to Thomas Sowell's latest Random Thoughts column. I enjoyed the entire column, but here is a snippet that was particularly amusing:
A reader suggests that members of Congress should wear uniforms, like NASCAR drivers, so that we will know who their corporate sponsors are. Many of those in Congress should also wear logos representing the teachers' unions, environmentalist extremists and other special interests.

I am not sure that they'd have enough room on their uniforms.

I think we shouldn't pay them anything but a housing stipend for a small hotel room - ala business travelers - and travel expenses for getting to and from Washington. Maybe a food per diem that doesn't cover lunch. Give 'em $100 per day per diem for food, maybe.

Then they would have to have a job outside of Congress. Also, no health benefits. They can handle that with their employer like the rest of us (or individually, like some Americans do). If we did this, we wouldn't need term limits. No one would continue to be in Congress for decades at a time unless he were truly interested in helping the country.

I also freely admit that this has all come up in brainstorming with Travel Man, and that the original "don't pay them" was his idea.

Fully agree. Being a representative or a senator should never have evolved into a lucrative career.
