Jimmy Carter Lowers the Bar

Obviously concerned about the probability of being undertaken by Barack Obama for the position of worst president ever, Jimmy Carter decided to remind people of what a despicable failure he was as president and since then as an annoying, anti-semetic, moronic ex-president.
Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday that U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst to President Barack Obama during a speech to Congress last week was an act "based on racism" and rooted in fears of a black president. "I think it's based on racism," Carter said at a town hall held at his presidential center in Atlanta.
Nice. A former president actually can read Congressman Wilson's mind and knows he called Obama a liar because he is black and not just because he was lying. Amazing.

What makes Carter's attempts even more pathetic is despite his efforts he still was not as bad a president as James Buchanan. Not for lack of effort, but for lack of opportunity. The strife between free states and slave states gave Buchanan a greater chance to be the worst ever. And Buchanan made the most of that opportunity.

Don't forget Franklin Pierce, for my money the worst of all.

I'm no fan of Pierce, but his worst behavior was after leaving the White House with his treasonous support of the south. Also, I tend to cut him some slack because of the tragic loss of his young son just after being elected. I couldn't imagine carrying the burden of the presidency in the aftermath of that kind of loss while still grieving. Pierce is still in the bottom five. He is just not dead last in my book.

The reason I rank Pierce lowest is because he was simply ineffectual. He was the first president to have his vetoes regularly over-riden. He completely lost control of Congress, and was such a non-entity that he in many ways helped push the country to the brink of Civil War simply by doing nothing calm the country's passions. Granted I don't know that any of the pre-War presidents could have prevented it, but Pierce certainly didn't help.

But I won't argue that much with your choice of Buchanan. And Carter certainly is third worst.

Also, I actually didn't know about his son's death. That does put a different perspective on things.
